Teenager Saves Boy From Raging Sea, Earns White House Invite

A dramatic rescue off the coast of California has turned a 16-year-old lifeguard into a national hero. Ryder Williams was on duty at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz when he spotted a 10-year-old boy being pulled by powerful waves about 14 meters from shore.

Video footage captured the intense moments as Williams fought the strong currents, some several meters high, to reach the child. He held onto the boy tightly, shielding him from the force of the waves. At one point, Williams used his own body to absorb the impact of a large wave, and both he and the child disappeared underwater before resurfacing.

The rescue, which lasted just over two minutes, also saw some beachgoers rush to assist, holding the pair to prevent them from being swept further out to sea. Scott Vander Dussen, who filmed the incident, described the sudden shift in conditions, noting how quickly the water overwhelmed the boy.

I wouldn’t say the waves were calm, but they were as you would expect, with a normal rhythm and intensity. And then everything changed in a split second. Many were caught off guard.

President Donald Trump recognized Williams' bravery, tweeting his intention to award the young man a high civilian honor at the White House, possibly alongside the boy he saved. Despite the praise, supervisors for lifeguards in California state parks advise the public against intervening in professional rescues, as it can sometimes create additional problems.

The child was examined by emergency medical personnel after the rescue and reunited with his parents. The incident highlights the dangers of the ocean, even on days that may not appear outwardly calm, and the critical role of trained lifeguards.
