Cat burglar? Suspect reportedly stole kitten before attempted bank robbery

A man attempting to rob a bank in Beltsville, Maryland, was apprehended by police earlier this week, with authorities discovering he was allegedly carrying a stolen kitten.

The suspect did have a stolen cat, and the cat was returned.

The Prince George’s County Police Department confirmed the arrest, stating that officers took the suspect into custody after he allegedly attempted to rob a PNC Bank branch. The department noted that the suspect was in possession of a stolen cat, which was subsequently returned.

According to a Facebook post from the local cat rescue organization Beltsville Community Cats, the kitten, a 3.5-month-old tuxedo named Magnolia, was allegedly stolen from an adoption habitat at a Pet Supplies Plus store. The shelter claimed the suspect attempted to use the kitten as a distraction during the robbery, asking the bank manager to hold her while he prepared a note for the teller.

While police have not formally confirmed all details from the shelter's account, they stated that no injuries were reported. The shelter reported that Magnolia was found safe in the bank manager's office and has since been returned to their care. Employees at the pet store reportedly told local media that the suspect had visited the store regularly and used a key to access the kitten's enclosure before taking her.

He asked the bank manager to hold the kitten while he wrote a note, then handed the note to a teller demanding all the cash.

Magnolia is now back with Beltsville Community Cats and is still available for adoption. The incident remains under investigation by authorities.
