Catfish sparks political clash between Lega and Fratelli d'Italia in regional council

A digital fishing logbook and a doubling of penalties for using illegal equipment have ignited a political clash between the Lega and Fratelli d'Italia parties within the regional council. The controversy emerged during the budget adjustment for 2026-2028.

The Lega party, through its representative Floriano Massardi, champions the new digital logbook system. Massardi expressed surprise at Fratelli d'Italia's shift in position, noting that they had previously voted in favor of the amendment in committee. He explained that the digital logbook is intended to enhance the traceability of catches and combat poaching, and will be optional, complementing the existing paper booklet.

We are against the introduction of the digital logbook as proposed by the Lega and against the disproportionate increases in sanctions.

Conversely, Diego Invernici of Fratelli d'Italia stated their opposition to the digital logbook and the "disproportionate" increase in sanctions. He argued that these measures risk alienating both professional fishermen and amateur anglers. The proposed sanctions can reach up to 6,000 euros for using unauthorized gear.

The dispute highlights differing approaches to regulating the fishing sector, with the Lega emphasizing technological solutions and enforcement, while Fratelli d'Italia appears more concerned with the potential impact on the fishing community. The differing votes on the amendment, even within the majority coalition, underscore the tension.
