Changhua, Taiwan – The vibrant Dajia Mazu pilgrimage, a cornerstone of Taiwanese folk religious practice, was marred by shocking violence as three suspects were arrested for assaulting police officers. The incident, which occurred on the evening of April 18th as the procession passed through Changhua City, saw law enforcement personnel brutally attacked while performing their duties.

Our police officers, including Detective Captain Xiao Dengyuan, who suffered a broken nose, were injured as they attempted to manage the crowds and ensure the smooth passage of the deity's palanquin. The swift action by the Changhua police led to the arrest of one suspect at the scene and three others in Taichung the following afternoon. These individuals, reportedly known to each other and with previous criminal records including drug offenses and public order violations, were allegedly involved in a friction that escalated into physical violence. The investigation is ongoing to determine if any other individuals were involved.
