Chinese Naval Vessels Detected Sailing South of Amami Oshima, Japan Monitors Movements

Tokyo – The Japanese Ministry of Defense has confirmed the presence of two Chinese naval vessels, identified as a Type 052D destroyer (hull number '133') and a Type 054A frigate (hull number '577'), transiting waters south of Amami Oshima. These vessels were observed proceeding eastward towards the Pacific Ocean, with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force closely monitoring their movements.

The sighting comes at a time of heightened regional military activity. The United States, the Philippines, and Japan are currently engaged in the large-scale 'Balikatan 2026' joint exercises, which are taking place primarily in the South China Sea. Japan's participation in these drills, including the passage of its warships like the JS Ise through waters near Taiwan, has drawn a strong reaction from Beijing.

At around 11 a.m. on April 19, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force confirmed Chinese naval vessels sailing about 60 kilometers southwest of Yokodō Island in Kagoshima Prefecture, heading east.

In response to Japan's involvement in the US-Philippines exercises and the passage of its vessels near Taiwan, China had previously announced plans for 'joint combat readiness patrols' in the East China Sea. The current transit of Chinese warships through waters monitored by Japan underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics and ongoing military posturing in the region. Japan remains vigilant, ensuring the security of its surrounding waters and airspace.
