Causes of TB Sufferers Passing Military Training

A candidate for village cooperative manager, Novia Rahmadhani Sihotang, died from tuberculosis just days after completing military basic training. The incident has raised questions about the health screening process for such positions.

Officials from the Indonesian National Armed Forces' Health Corps explained that Novia had undergone all mandatory health examinations, including physical and laboratory tests, as well as X-rays and ultrasounds. According to Lieutenant Colonel Ichsan, the results of these examinations did not indicate any signs of tuberculosis. He stated that the X-ray specifically showed no signs of the disease.

However, Ichsan noted that the initial findings suggested Novia had pneumonia, an infection of the lungs caused by a virus, rather than tuberculosis. He explained that tuberculosis is a disqualifying condition for the role, but pneumonia was not considered grounds for rejection. Despite the initial clearance, health officials acknowledged that not all diseases are detectable during preliminary screenings. Following Novia's death, contact tracing identified further TBC infections among other participants and staff, leading to isolation measures.

Major General Ketut Gede Wetan Pastia, head of the Defense Ministry's Human Resources Development Agency, admitted that some illnesses might go undetected during initial health checks. The ministry has since contacted the Ministry of Health to assist in tracking the spread of tuberculosis and other potential infectious agents.
