CCM councillor held over death of motorcycle taxi driver

Tanzanian police are holding Greyson Kyondo, a councillor for Myamba Ward in Same District, over a road crash that killed a 24-year-old motorcycle taxi driver.

Kilimanjaro Regional Police Commander Simon Maigwa said the crash occurred on September 4 in Kambeni village. Kyondo was driving a Mitsubishi Fuso from Lugulu village toward Mamba Myamba when the collision occurred, Maigwa said.

This incident occurred on September 4, 2026, in Kambeni Village, Myamba Ward, Same District, Kilimanjaro Region, where the suspect was driving a Mitsubishi Fuso from Lugulu Village toward Mamba Myamba.

The injured driver, Daudi Kibwengo of Myamba village, was taken to Myamba Health Centre for treatment but died while receiving care. Maigwa said an initial investigation found that the crash resulted from negligent driving without proper consideration for other road users.

The initial investigation found that the cause of the crash was negligence by the Mitsubishi Fuso driver, who drove without taking proper precautions for other road users.

Police continue to question Kyondo and conduct a fuller investigation to establish the exact circumstances. “After the investigation is completed, the suspect will be taken to court for further legal action,” Maigwa said.

Sadick Mbonea, chairman of Kambeni village, said he went to the scene after receiving the report and found that Kibwengo had already been taken to hospital. Kibwengo was buried on September 5 in Ghoha village, Myamba Ward.
