Initially, Kenya-based Nation Media Group (NMG) acquired a controlling stake, but due to Tanzania's 2016 Media Services Act limiting foreign ownership to 49%, NMG reduced its shares. While Media Bias/Fact Check rates its sister publication, The Citizen, as 'Left-Center biased' for its opinion section and 'High factual reporting' for news, Mwananchi has faced government suspensions for content deemed 'damaging to the country's image' or 'provoking hostility.' For instance, in 2013, it was banned for an article based on confidential documents and for a photo related to police and worshippers. In October 2024, its digital platforms were suspended for 30 days over content about missing or murdered relatives. The recent acquisition of its parent company, NMG, by a politically connected billionaire raises concerns about potential editorial influence.
