CDU appoints Mathias Middelberg as new party treasurer

Mathias Middelberg will take over as the CDU’s federal treasurer after a reshuffle left the party post vacant. The party’s federal executive board appointed the 61-year-old budget expert, the CDU said.

Middelberg has sat in the Bundestag since 2009 and serves as deputy chairman of the Union parliamentary group. Budget and financial policy are among his main areas of expertise.

“Mathias Middelberg stands for reliability, economic sense and great political experience,” CDU leader and Chancellor Friedrich Merz said. The appointment, Merz added, reflects the party’s choice of experience, seriousness and a clear approach to regulatory policy for a key leadership role.

The CDU treasurer oversees the party’s finances. The party is funded through state funds, membership fees and donations.

The appointment follows several personnel changes in the government, the Union parliamentary group and the CDU after Jens Spahn resigned as Union parliamentary group leader. Those changes included new leadership in the Chancellery, the Health Ministry and the Transport Ministry, as well as a new state minister for federal-state cooperation in the Chancellery.
