Central Hanoi streets to close nightly for flood control construction

Key intersections and several central streets in Hanoi, including Ly Thuong Kiet, Quan Su, and Trang Thi, will be subject to temporary road closures and traffic diversions. The closures are necessary for the construction of a drainage system aimed at resolving persistent flooding in the Phan Boi Chau - Ly Thuong Kiet area and the Old Quarter.

The construction work will involve mobile barriers and will take place nightly between 8 PM and 5 AM, starting May 23 and concluding June 15. Specific sections of Ly Thuong Kiet, Quan Su (between Quan Su - Ly Thuong Kiet and Quan Su - Hai Ba Trung intersections), and Trang Thi streets will have phased closures using flexible barriers and B40 mesh fencing, covering segments of 5 to 10 meters. Traffic will be rerouted accordingly, with signage directing vehicles around the affected zones.

Further traffic adjustments will occur at the Quang Trung - Tran Nhan Tong intersection, where fixed barriers will be installed. Traffic will be permitted to turn left from Quang Trung onto Tran Nhan Tong towards Ba Trieu. Mobile barriers will also be placed at intersections with Tran Nhan Tong and Nguyen Dinh Chieu. Notably, left turns from Tran Nhan Tong (heading towards Ba Trieu) onto Nguyen Dinh Chieu will be allowed, but vehicles on Nguyen Dinh Chieu will be prohibited from turning left onto Tran Nhan Tong.

Similar traffic management measures will be implemented at the Quang Trung - Nguyen Du intersection, with one-way traffic directed from Nguyen Du turning right onto Quang Trung towards Tran Nhan Tong. Additional mobile barriers will be used at intersections involving Quang Trung, Nguyen Gia Thieu, Ba Trieu, Tran Binh Trong, and Nguyen Du. The Quang Trung - Trang Thi intersection will also see fixed barriers, but one lane on Trang Thi street will remain open for traffic. Left turns from Trang Thi onto Quang Trung and from Quang Trung onto Trang Thi will be prohibited. Construction at these intersections is scheduled to proceed 24 hours a day until June 15.
