Central Macedonia: Puppy that coexisted with wolf pack dies

The unusual bond between a domestic puppy and a wild wolf pack in Central Macedonia has come to a tragic end with the puppy's death. For at least 40 days, the small white dog lived alongside the wolves, an observation described as one of the most unusual behavioral phenomena recorded by researchers.

For at least 40 days from our first recording – and likely for more than 50 in total – the little dog coexisted with a wild wolf family, giving us one of the most unusual behavioral observations we have recorded all these years.

Thodoris Komninos, a researcher studying the pack for his doctoral thesis, shared the sad news, noting that the puppy had been in good condition until three days prior. It played with the wolf pups, followed the mother wolf, and moved normally with the pack. However, its condition rapidly deteriorated, showing severe diarrhea and lethargy.

Researchers suspect a serious gastrointestinal problem, possibly caused by parasites, a bacterial infection, contaminated food, or stress from adapting to a wild environment. Without further examination, the precise cause of death remains speculative. The puppy was found dead in the same spot where it had isolated itself.

In a poignant moment, one of the young wolves, with whom the puppy often played, approached the ailing dog and tried to initiate play, but the puppy was too weak to respond. Researchers decided against retrieving the body to avoid disturbing the wolf family, emphasizing respect for the wild animals.

We recorded it visibly exhausted, with severe diarrhea and almost no desire to move. Everything suggests that a serious gastrointestinal problem manifested, which could be due to various causes, such as parasitic infection, bacterial infection, consumption of spoiled food, or even stress from adapting to a wild environment. However, without the necessary examinations, we cannot know the exact cause of its death, and any estimation would be just a hypothesis.

This story serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities of survival in nature. The researchers noted that out of six wolf pups born this year to the same mother wolf, only one is confirmed to have survived. The puppy's story, though brief, highlighted the challenges of the wild, where birth is just the beginning and survival to adulthood is the true struggle.
