Cerro Porteño stumbles against Trinidad in Paraguayan football opener

Cerro Porteño began the Paraguayan football league's Torneo Clausura with a disappointing 1-2 home defeat against Sportivo Trinidense. The club, often referred to as 'El Ciclón de Barrio Obrero,' took an early lead in the fourth minute with a goal from debutant Iván Ramírez, assisted by César Bobadilla.

However, the initial advantage proved short-lived. Sportivo Trinidense, nicknamed 'El Triki,' grew into the game and equalized in the 61st minute through a header from defender Axel Cañete following a corner kick. The decisive goal came in the 77th minute when substitute Luis Abreu scored from inside the area after Trinidense capitalized on a defensive error by Cerro Porteño.

Despite the setback in the domestic league, Cerro Porteño's primary objective for the second half of the year is to perform well in the Copa Libertadores. They are scheduled to face Brazilian club Palmeiras in the round of 16 on August 12. To bolster their squad for these challenges, the club has signed Argentine goalkeeper Manuel Roffo, midfielder Agustín Almendra, and defender Lucas Merolla.

Other clubs are also strengthening their rosters. Olimpia, preparing for their Copa Sudamericana round of 16 match, has acquired Argentine forward Braian Romero and young player César Miño. They have also signed New Zealand midfielder Tim Payne, aiming to expand the club's global brand.

The first round of the Torneo Clausura continues with matches between Recoleta and San Lorenzo, and Sportivo Ameliano against Nacional. The round concludes on Sunday with Olimpia hosting Libertad and Guaraní playing Luqueño.
