Çeşme Reconnects with its Historical Fountains Through Restoration Project

Çeşme, Turkey, is set to reconnect with its namesake historical fountains through the "Çeşmelerin Çeşme'si" (Fountain of Fountains) project. This initiative, a collaboration between the Çeşme Municipality Vision Office and İzmir Ekonomi University's Architectural Restoration Program, has successfully concluded its extensive field studies. Over six weeks, 26 students organized into 13 teams conducted detailed measurements, photographic documentation, and on-site inspections of 16 historical fountains located in the Musalla, Sakarya, 16 Eylül, and İsmet İnönü neighborhoods. The collected data, including surveys, material analyses, and decay assessments, scientifically records the current state of these historic structures and lays the groundwork for future restoration efforts. The project's primary goal is to document the architectural features and original materials of Çeşme's historical fountains, identify deterioration over time, determine conservation needs, and strengthen the visibility of this cultural heritage within the city's collective memory. Çeşme Mayor Lâl Denizli highlighted the project's contribution to preserving historical structures and revitalizing the city's identity. "Our teachers and students have completed the field studies for our historical heritage, from which Çeşme takes its name. With the restoration work we will start, Çeşme will soon be reunited with its fountains," Denizli stated. She emphasized that protecting cultural heritage is vital for sustainable tourism, noting that while beaches, nature, and general tourism are prominent, strengthening cultural tourism requires safeguarding and showcasing historical assets. Denizli described the historical fountains as powerful symbols of the city's identity, aiming to pass this legacy to future generations and create a city where visitors can experience all of Çeşme's values. Yarkın Üstünes, an instructor from İzmir Ekonomi University's Architectural Restoration Program, described the project as a significant step in carrying the city's memory into the future. "A city's identity is strengthened not only by new buildings but also by the values that keep its past alive," Üstünes said. He added that documenting and preparing the historical fountains for restoration using scientific methods is crucial. The project also serves as a practical educational experience for students and a model of university-community collaboration. Restoration projects will be implemented based on the technical studies, considering each fountain's original materials, construction techniques, and causes of decay, with a focus on preserving the original texture.
