Ceuta President Calls Situation for Children 'Untenable'

The situation for roughly 1,100 unaccompanied minors in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta is "untenable," according to the region's president, Juan Jesús Vivas. He stated that the reception centers for minors are currently overwhelmed, operating at an astonishing 2,600 percent above their intended capacity.

"Ceuta is in an extremely precarious situation, and we are calling for help," Vivas declared, highlighting the severe strain on the enclave's resources. The regional prefect, Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano, echoed these concerns, emphasizing that Ceuta has "no additional space whatsoever" and is under "very strong pressure" to accommodate the influx of young people.

Spanish police have registered 528 minors who were subsequently transferred to reception facilities. The NGO Save the Children also pointed to the critical conditions, noting that Ceuta is currently caring for about a thousand children, far exceeding the capacity of a center designed for approximately 100 individuals.

President Vivas's plea for assistance in managing the crisis has met with resistance from regions governed by the opposition People's Party (PP), sometimes in coalition with the far-right Vox party. This political division complicates efforts to find a national solution. The report also noted that approximately 72,000 people had arrived in Ceuta by sea in the past week, with most having since returned to Morocco, and 79 deaths reported.
