Champions League matches to begin with minute of silence for Nepal flood victims

Every match in the opening round of the European Champions League will begin with a minute of silence for the victims of the severe floods that struck Nepal at the end of August.

UEFA said the tribute would take place at all 18 matches scheduled from Tuesday through Thursday. The organization will also display the message, “Nepal, you are not alone.”

“Europe’s football family will stand together and express its support for the Nepali people with a minute of silence. We extend our sympathy to the families of those who died, and we hope the people recover as soon as possible from the tragedy and its consequences,” UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin said.

The floods on Aug. 26 killed about 1,400 people, while more than 5,000 remained missing, the article said.
