Chania: Mother charged with attempted homicide in daughter's injury case; partner jailed

A 25-year-old mother in Chania, Greece, has been charged with attempted homicide in connection with the injuries sustained by her 3-year-old daughter. The child is currently receiving intensive care at PAGNI hospital. The mother appeared before the Chania prosecutor's office on Wednesday following an arrest warrant and was granted until Saturday, May 30, to present her defense.

The charges stem from the daughter's injuries under unclear circumstances. The case became more complicated due to the mother's inconsistent and false statements, which led to her conviction and a three-year prison sentence without suspension on May 26. This is the third child among her four children to suffer harm.

Meanwhile, the mother's 25-year-old partner, who is also the father of her youngest child, was sentenced to three years in prison without suspension and fined 5,000 euros. He was found to have been living and working illegally in Greece for eight years, without social security or tax numbers, while employed in greenhouses in Akrotiri.

His lawyer stated that the man arrived in Greece in 2018 seeking work and believed a document he obtained for 1,000 euros would legalize his status. The lawyer emphasized that his client had no intention of causing further trouble for the authorities. The investigation into the 3-year-old girl's abuse is ongoing, and the prosecutor's office will decide whether to press charges against the partner once the preliminary investigation is complete.
