Chaos in Buenaventura: Fires, blockades, and destruction follow major earthquake

Buenaventura is grappling with one of its most challenging periods in a decade following a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake that has caused widespread infrastructure damage and social upheaval. The seismic event has left a trail of destruction, with images circulating on social media showing buildings, particularly in peripheral neighborhoods, collapsing violently.

Several sections of the road leading to Buenaventura are blocked by landslides, hindering access and emergency response efforts. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, a fire broke out at the Marte transient detention center, reportedly stemming from a dispute among inmates. This incident added to the damage already inflicted on the structure by the earthquake, escalating concerns among local authorities.

One particularly striking event occurred at the National Learning Service (SENA) campus, where students and staff managed to evacuate just as the structure began to shake and sections collapsed. The institution has expressed solidarity with affected families and called for unity in addressing the needs of those displaced.

Authorities are evaluating the declaration of a public calamity and a curfew to ensure safety and expedite emergency response. Preliminary reports indicate ten deaths, 174 injuries, three missing persons, and one trapped individual. Additionally, 287 families are affected, and 397 have been displaced. Infrastructure damage includes 53 destroyed homes, 91 damaged homes, and 29 affected schools. The main access road to the port remains closed due to three landslides, and the hospital network is operating at full capacity on high alert.
