Charges Filed in Orthopedic Shoe Case: Doctors and Entrepreneurs Face Prosecution

A significant legal battle is unfolding in Hungary as prosecutors have brought charges against 76 individuals, a group that includes 36 medical professionals, in a sprawling case of alleged social security fraud. The core of the indictment centers on a criminal organization suspected of orchestrating a scheme to defraud the national health insurance system through the illicit prescription and distribution of orthopedic footwear and other medical devices.

The investigation, spearheaded by the Hajdú-Bihar County Prosecutor's Office, revealed a systematic operation where doctors, allegedly in exchange for illicit benefits, issued unjustified prescriptions. These prescriptions were then used by a Békéscsaba-based company to claim substantial social security reimbursements, totaling over 4.5 billion forints between January 2018 and December 2022. The scale of the alleged fraud is staggering, impacting both public funds and the integrity of the healthcare system.

Authorities have taken measures to recover illicit gains, freezing assets including bank deposits, properties, and vehicles. Prosecutors are pursuing severe penalties, including imprisonment and substantial fines, for those involved in the criminal enterprise.
