Charles Carrera Case Advances: Key Moment Nears Before Trial Begins

The legal proceedings against former senator Charles Carrera are intensifying as he approaches a crucial deadline to respond to the prosecution's indictment. This response will shape his defense strategy throughout the upcoming trial. The prosecution, led by prosecutors Sandra Fleitas and Verónica García, successfully requested the extension of existing precautionary measures against Carrera. These include the obligation to maintain a fixed residence and refrain from leaving the country without judicial authorization.

Judge Diovanet Olivera approved the extension, a decision that was not opposed by Carrera's defense attorneys, Juan Manuel González Rossi and Lucía Fernández. Carrera has publicly expressed his eagerness for the trial to begin, asserting his innocence and claiming he has been targeted.

In his public statements, including a recent post on X, Carrera stated, "I was proven to be a victim of espionage for denouncing the handover of the port. Then they framed me for a case... Today the trial begins. And the stage also begins where I can prove, with evidence and in front of society, my absolute innocence." The prosecution is seeking a four-year prison sentence and a fine for Carrera, based on their investigation into an incident where Víctor Hernández was shot and paralyzed in 2013. The accusation centers on Carrera's alleged role in ordering Hernández's prolonged hospitalization at the Police Hospital at state expense, during Carrera's tenure as Secretary General Director of the Ministry of the Interior.
