Charlize Theron Explains Her Special Connection to the Mad Max Cast

Charlize Theron’s memories of Mad Max: Fury Road are tied not only to the film, but also to the first months of raising her daughter Jackson.

Theron adopted Jackson in 2012, around the time filming began. Without a nanny while working in Namibia, she relied on people from the production to help care for the baby between scenes.

The driver and Theron’s assistant looked after her between takes, while co-stars including Zoë Kravitz, Courtney Eaton, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Nicholas Hoult also helped.

Those are some of my favorite memories because she learned to walk on that film. That’s why I have such a deep connection to this film.

Theron remembered feeding Jackson between scenes and handing her to the other women on the cast. She also joked that the baby sometimes fell asleep or became sick on Hoult, who played Nux. Jackson took her first steps during the production, making the film one of Theron’s most cherished memories. “Those are some of my favorite memories because she learned to walk on that film. That’s why I have such a deep connection to this film,” she said.

Theron now has two daughters, Jackson, 14, and August, 12, whom she adopted in 2015. She has previously said adoption was always how she imagined her family, telling partners that “my family would one day be based on adoption. That was never a second option for me. It was always the first.”
