ChatGPT Desktop Version Introduces Upgraded Voice Mode! Claude Voice Also Supports Stronger Models

OpenAI has rolled out a significant update to its ChatGPT desktop application, introducing an upgraded voice mode driven by GPT-Live. This enhancement allows users to interact with ChatGPT using voice commands to manage tasks such as checking calendars, drafting emails, preparing for meetings, and executing various functions on their computers.

The new voice capabilities were initially launched for ChatGPT's mobile and web versions earlier in July and have now been extended to desktop versions for Windows and macOS. Users can leverage voice to manage and continue workflows across different chats, work projects, and Codex tasks. Mac users can further benefit from the Appshots feature, enabling ChatGPT to reference on-screen windows for enhanced contextual understanding and more precise assistance.

Furthermore, the upgraded voice mode integrates with OpenAI's 'Computer Use' feature, which, with user authorization, allows ChatGPT to operate the computer, access local files, and utilize ChatGPT plugins. It also supports remote functionality when paired with the ChatGPT iOS app. This enhanced desktop voice mode is available to users subscribed to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Edu, and Enterprise plans.

Meanwhile, Anthropic has also delivered a long-awaited major upgrade to its Claude AI's voice mode. This update not only introduces new functionalities but also enables support for the more powerful Claude Opus and Claude Sonnet models for the first time. Previously, Claude's voice mode was limited to the Haiku model, which prioritizes rapid responses over deep reasoning.

With this upgrade, paying subscribers to Anthropic's premium models can now utilize Claude Opus and Claude Sonnet through the voice mode, gaining access to their enhanced reasoning abilities. Anthropic stated that extending voice mode to these advanced models aligns Claude's voice capabilities more closely with its text-based intelligence. Users can switch between models during an ongoing voice conversation and utilize the Connectors feature to integrate Claude with work tools like Gmail and Slack, boosting efficiency. The upgraded Claude voice mode supports 11 languages, excluding Chinese, and allows language switching mid-conversation.
