ChatGPT suffers global outage, OpenAI confirms issues

ChatGPT, the popular artificial intelligence chatbot developed by OpenAI, suffered a significant global service disruption on Saturday. Users across the world reported an inability to log into their accounts, access past conversations, or encountered error messages, indicating a widespread outage.

OpenAI acknowledged the incident, stating that the platform was "experiencing issues" and a "high rate of errors." The problems reportedly began around 13:00 Romanian time, with user reports flooding in from various regions, including the United States, multiple European countries like the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Greece, and Croatia, as well as India, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Australia. The scale of the outage meant that users were unable to access their chat histories, chats failed to load, and the platform displayed errors such as "primaryapi_server_error" or "500 Internal Server Error."

The disruption extended beyond just the ChatGPT interface, affecting OpenAI's APIs and the Codex programming platform as well. Data from DownDetector indicated that over 3,000 users reported problems, with ChatGPT being the most affected service. The widespread nature of the issue led to "Is ChatGPT not working?" trending on Google searches as users sought to confirm the problem. Amidst the technical difficulties, social media platforms like X, Reddit, and TikTok saw a surge of humorous memes and ironic videos, with many users jokingly sharing their initial troubleshooting steps before realizing the problem was global.
