Chelsea in advanced talks to sign Brighton striker Welbeck

Chelsea is actively pursuing experienced reinforcements, with striker Danny Welbeck of Brighton reportedly a key target. The London club is said to be in advanced negotiations to sign the 35-year-old forward, signaling a potential shift in their recruitment strategy.

Club owner Behdad Eghbali indicated in April that Chelsea's model of signing young players might need a "tweak." This suggests a growing desire for seasoned professionals to balance the squad. Welbeck, who enjoyed a career-high 13 league goals in 37 appearances for Brighton last season, could fit this requirement. He has scored 51 goals in 201 matches since joining Brighton from Watford in 2020.

The potential arrival of Welbeck occurs as Chelsea faces uncertainty regarding several of its current forwards. Joao Pedro is considered the primary option, but the futures of Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson are all in question. Guiu is reportedly available for transfer, with Chelsea valuing him at approximately £25 million. Jackson, having returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, is open to leaving despite initial expectations of staying. Delap is also likely to depart, and Emegha's future remains uncertain despite his recent arrival from Strasbourg.

Chelsea has already been active in the transfer market, securing club-record signing Morgan Rogers for £117 million, full-back Marco Palestra, and nearing a deal for center-back Maxence Lacroix. The pursuit of Welbeck underscores a potential strategic adjustment to integrate experience alongside emerging talent.
