Chhattisgarh’s Pandavani legend Teejan Bai dies at 70

Teejan Bai, a celebrated exponent of Pandavani, a traditional narrative folk-art form from Chhattisgarh, India, passed away on Sunday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Raipur after a prolonged illness.

Bai, 70, was widely recognized for her powerful voice and her ability to transform Pandavani, which narrates episodes from the Mahabharata through dramatic storytelling and singing, from a regional tradition into an internationally acclaimed art form. Her performances captivated audiences both in India and abroad, solidifying her status as one of India's most esteemed folk artists.

Born in Chhattisgarh's Durg district, Bai had been receiving treatment since May 27. She was a recipient of India's highest civilian honors, including the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and the Padma Vibhushan, the nation's second-highest civilian award.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Bai, stating on X that he was "Deeply saddened by the demise of renowned Pandavani singer Teejan Bai ji." He added, "She gave Chhattisgarh’s folk art a unique global identity through her magnificent performances. Her passing is an irreparable loss to the world of art and culture."
