Chiapas reports damage in 17 municipalities from July 17 earthquake; evaluations continue

Chiapas is assessing the damage after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck on July 17, affecting 17 municipalities. The State Civil Protection Secretariat's Monitoring Center reported that infrastructure across these areas sustained damage.

According to the State Civil Protection System, the municipalities of Cacahoatán, Suchiate, Tapachula, Chiapa de Corzo, Tecpatán, Villaflores, Montecristo de Guerrero, Huixtla, Bella Vista, Chicomuselo, Frontera Comalapa, Capitán Luis Ángel Vidal, Acala, Frontera Hidalgo, Jitotol, Ostuacán, and Motozintla were impacted.

The earthquake damaged 389 houses, rendering 22 uninhabitable and causing one to collapse. In the health sector, three hospitals and one medical unit suffered damage. Additionally, two health houses and two IMSS-Bienestar units were affected within Sanitary Jurisdiction No. VIII. Educational institutions also saw damage, with 25 schools impacted, along with 25 other public buildings across various municipalities.
