Chiayi's rural areas transform beautifully: Daanan Elementary, Heping Community win national environmental education awards

Daanan Elementary School in Chiayi County's mountainous Meishan Township has earned an honorable mention in the national environmental education awards' school category. Meanwhile, Heping Community in Dapu Township, situated near Tsengwen Reservoir, secured a special commendation in the community category. These accolades highlight the sustained efforts of educators, students, and local residents in safeguarding their environment.

At Daanan Elementary, environmental education transcends textbooks. The school's "Sustainable WISER Green Realm · NEED Daanan" curriculum encourages students to explore nature firsthand. Teachers guide children to observe stream ecosystems and cultivate local wild vegetables on campus. Principal Lai Chung-ho emphasizes that environmental education begins with the heart, fostering a deep connection to nature through observation and system building.

Heping Community's story is one of renewal and tradition. Once a nuisance, driftwood has been transformed by residents into small violins that convey environmental messages. This initiative has helped elders reconnect with their community identity and taught younger generations the value of water resources. Environmental Protection Bureau Director Chang Hui-chuan noted that the community's ability to translate environmental data into music and local narratives, reconnecting with nature's rhythm, deeply impressed the judges.
