Chickens Lead to Discovery of Ancient Underground City in Turkey

A chance discovery, initiated by a man investigating his chickens' mysterious disappearances, has unearthed one of the most astonishing archaeological finds of the 20th century: the ancient underground city of Derinkuyu in Turkey's Cappadocia region. What began as a simple home renovation led to the uncovering of a vast subterranean complex, hidden for centuries beneath a resident's basement.

Archaeologists identified the site as Derinkuyu, the largest excavated underground settlement in Cappadocia. This multi-level city plunges 85 meters below the surface, comprising 18 interconnected levels linked by tunnels and passages. It is estimated that Derinkuyu could shelter as many as 20,000 people, along with their livestock and essential supplies, providing refuge during periods of danger.

The underground city was remarkably self-sufficient, equipped with living quarters, food storage areas, stables, wine cellars, wells, churches, and a sophisticated ventilation system ensuring fresh air even at the deepest levels. Massive stone doors could seal off passages, offering protection against invaders. Historians believe the earliest sections date back over two thousand years, with various civilizations expanding the complex over centuries.

Derinkuyu primarily served as a secure sanctuary during times of war and invasion, allowing entire communities to retreat underground for extended periods. Following its discovery, extensive archaeological research commenced, revealing numerous other entrances, many concealed within private homes. Today, Derinkuyu stands as a significant tourist attraction in Cappadocia and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, with ongoing explorations suggesting the full extent of the subterranean system may still be unrevechartered.
