Chicxulub Puerto residents denounce mangrove destruction in Yucatan

Residents in Chicxulub Puerto, Yucatan, are sounding the alarm over the ongoing destruction of a vital mangrove area. They report that individuals, whom they identify as invaders, have been cutting down and burning coastal vegetation with the apparent goal of clearing land for housing construction.

These destructive acts have been observed over the past few weeks, with fires set to mangroves in the early morning hours. Residents suspect this is a tactic to facilitate land filling. Beyond the significant ecological damage to the wetland ecosystems, the fires pose a direct threat to nearby properties, raising serious safety concerns among the local population.

The affected area in Chicxulub Puerto is a protected zone, designated as part of the State Reserve of Wetlands and Mangroves of the North Coast of Yucatan. This region was recognized as a Ramsar site in 2022, encompassing over 54,000 hectares, highlighting its international importance for biodiversity and coastal protection.

Environmental advocates are increasingly vocal, warning that land invasions, illegal dumping of construction debris for land reclamation, and the clandestine burning of mangroves are escalating unchecked.
