Chief calls for co-operation to prevent fires as world changes at a ‘rapid pace’

The chief of the Penticton Indian Band in British Columbia asserts that wildfires, such as the one forcing thousands from their homes in the Okanagan, are not natural events and demand proactive solutions. Chief Greg Gabriel, whose band members are among the evacuees, believes that addressing the issue requires a closer look at logging practices and measures to combat drought conditions.

Gabriel has urged the provincial government to consider the necessity of an alternative emergency route for communities facing crises, particularly as Highway 97 has been rendered impassable by the wildfire. British Columbia Premier David Eby acknowledged the significant demand for secondary egress roads and stated that the Ministry of Transportation will work on prioritizing potential routes.

Approximately 20,000 people were displaced from their homes in Summerland and surrounding areas last Friday when the Bald Range wildfire spread rapidly within hours. It remains uncertain when residents will be permitted to return, as the fire is still out of control, and a lightning storm with unpredictable winds is anticipated.
