McMaster researchers identify cause of Hamilton’s mystery soot

Researchers at McMaster University have identified the likely source of a persistent black grime that has been covering homes and yards in Hamilton, Canada, for years. The 'What's The Grime' study, which involved imaging and processing samples, concluded that coal combustion is the primary culprit behind the mysterious soot.

The study also revealed that the soot's composition is complex, indicating that it originates from various sources rather than a single point. Grace Yao, a PhD student and co-lead of the study, expressed concern that the grime poses a risk to young children and pets, who might accidentally ingest it. Residents have voiced growing frustration over the lack of public information regarding safety precautions and proper cleaning methods for the soot.

Concerns also extend to the safety of homegrown produce. Residents are worried whether food grown in gardens contaminated by the soot remains safe for consumption. To address these community anxieties and further understand the grime's origins and makeup, Yao's team plans to conduct a second study.

The ongoing investigation aims to provide clearer answers and potential solutions for the residents affected by the pervasive black dust, which has been a source of worry and inconvenience in the city's industrial areas.
