Chief State Attorney Turudić to Attend Gospić Meeting on Hazardous Waste

Chief State Attorney Ivan Turudić is set to attend a session of the Croatian Parliament's Committee on Environmental Protection and Nature in Gospić. The meeting, scheduled for Friday, August 13, 2026, will focus on the hazardous waste situation at a local disposal site. Turudić's presence was requested by eight committee members who believe the discussion on environmental and health risks, as well as remediation efforts, could involve questions of criminal liability.

Committee President Dušica Radojčić confirmed Turudić's attendance. The invitation to Turudić, along with other officials, was proposed by committee members Marija Selak Raspudić, Ante Sanader, and others. Also invited are Ličko-senjski County Prefect Ernest Petry, Gospić Mayor Darko Milinović, director of the Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund Luka Balen, and representatives from the State Inspectorate. Petry and Milinović have confirmed their attendance, while confirmations from Balen and the deputy chief state inspector are still pending.

The committee meeting will also hear from Minister of Environmental Protection and Green Transition Marija Vučković and Minister of Health Irena Hrstić. All invited attendees will participate as rapporteurs, with eight minutes allocated for introductory statements, followed by questions and discussions. The committee will first be informed about activities undertaken, environmental and health risks, and the planned remediation timeline and budget. A second point on the agenda is a proposal for a public hearing with the ministers, Balen, Samac, Petry, and other relevant bodies, which could take place on August 18 if supported by committee members.

Radojčić explained that a public hearing differs from a regular committee session, aiming to elicit answers regarding observed shortcomings. She noted uncertainty about whether the public hearing would proceed or if the committee meeting would suffice for questioning.
