Chihuahua PAN launches billboard campaign against Morena; ruling party calls it 'desperate'

The National Action Party (PAN) in Chihuahua, Mexico, has ignited a political firestorm with a new billboard campaign that starkly equates the ruling Morena party with "death" and "narco."

Installed across the state capital, the billboards carry the provocative slogan "muerte y morena son lo mismo" (death and Morena are the same). Daniela Álvarez, the state leader of PAN, defended the campaign, stating that her party will not cease to point out alleged links between Morena and criminal elements. "From the north of the country, we tell you very clearly that death and Morena are the same," she declared during a press conference.

This aggressive campaign follows Morena's challenge to an electoral reform passed by the Chihuahua Congress, which would nullify elections if criminal elements are involved. The PAN's move is seen as a direct counter-attack, escalating the political tensions between the two parties.

The party accused PAN's state government, led by María Eugenia Campos Galván, of corruption and betraying the nation by allowing U.S. agents to operate within Mexican territory. Morena countered by highlighting its national record of lifting millions out of poverty and reducing homicides by 48%, contrasting it with what they termed the PAN's "lie as a political strategy."

Morena further criticized the Chihuahua state administration for allegedly allocating over 2.5 billion pesos to official advertising while the state continues to face high levels of violence, ranking first in some metrics in 2026. They argue this spending aims to obscure the reality of insecurity and violence in the state.
