Chiikawa Movie Set for Taiwan Premiere in Late July, Mandarin Chinese Version Early August

The beloved "Chiikawa" franchise is making its big screen debut with "The Movie Chiikawa: The Secret of Mermaid Island." Fans in Taiwan can mark their calendars for July 31, when the original Japanese version will be released, followed by a Mandarin Chinese dubbed version on August 7. This cinematic launch promises to bring the popular characters' adventures to life for a wider audience.

The movie adapts the "Mermaid Island Arc," a well-known storyline from the series. The plot kicks off when characters discover a mysterious flyer promising immense rewards, including free ramen and desserts, for a simple monster-hunting task on a remote island. This enticing offer lures Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi into what they believe is a dream vacation.

However, the island's charm quickly gives way to an unsettling atmosphere with the appearance of a legendary mermaid. A massive storm looms, transforming the initially heartwarming adventure into a suspenseful journey filled with the unknown. This shift in tone has led some fans to express a sense of unease, noting the story's potentially "scary" elements.

Alongside the film's release, new voice actors have been revealed for the Japanese version, including Tsuguo Mogami as "Shima Jirou" and Minori Suzuki as "Mermaid Siren." The theme song, "Kutsure," features lyrics by the original creator, Nagano, and is performed by Hachiware's voice actor, Makoto Tanaka. Details regarding the Mandarin Chinese voice cast are being kept confidential, though it is reported that the original creator was personally involved in their selection, heightening anticipation for the reveal.
