Child driving car strikes woman walking dog in California, police say

A woman in her 30s is in critical condition after a vehicle collision in Oakland, California, on Thursday morning. Police confirmed that a child under the age of 10 was driving the car that struck the pedestrian while she was walking her dog in a marked crosswalk.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. local time. Officers arriving at the scene found the female pedestrian, who was transported to an area hospital and listed in critical condition. The driver of the vehicle, also a juvenile under 10, and a passenger, also under 10, were taken to a hospital for medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.

According to police, the white Toyota Camry driven by the juvenile was traveling northbound on 35th Avenue. It reportedly struck another vehicle traveling southbound before losing control and hitting the pedestrian in the crosswalk. The woman's dog fled the scene but was later found unharmed. It remains unknown how the children accessed the vehicle or who owns it. Police have contacted the juveniles' parents, who are cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Authorities have not yet determined if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.
