Chile reaffirms ICC membership amid U.S. pressure

Chile has firmly stated its continued membership in the International Criminal Court (ICC), resisting pressure from the United States to leave the international body. Foreign Minister Francisco Pérez Mackenna confirmed Chile's position, underscoring its commitment to the court's principles.

"We are members of the International Criminal Court, and without prejudice to the fact that all organizations can be perfectible and improvable, we remain members of the ICC," Pérez Mackenna told reporters. His statement directly addressed inquiries following a recent push by U.S. officials to encourage Latin American countries to disassociate from the court.

The U.S. has been critical of the ICC, particularly concerning its investigations into actions by American personnel. This pressure has been felt across the region, with the U.S. Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, making appeals in Panama to countries within the Coalition against the American Drug Cartels (A3C), which includes Chile.

Pérez Mackenna's reiteration of Chile's stance highlights the South American nation's independent foreign policy and its continued support for international justice mechanisms, even in the face of diplomatic pressure from a key global power.
