Chile’s Erick Pulgar renews Flamengo contract through 2029

Erick Pulgar will remain at Flamengo through 2029, extending a relationship that has made the Chilean midfielder one of the central figures in the Brazilian club’s recent success.

Flamengo announced the agreement after months of negotiations between its directors and Pulgar’s representatives. The Chile international joined the Rio de Janeiro club in 2022 and quickly became a regular starter under then-coach Jorge Sampaoli. He kept that status through the coaching changes that followed from 2023 onward.

Pulgar has played 172 matches for Flamengo, recording 107 wins, 39 draws and 26 defeats. He has scored six goals and provided nine assists. During his time with the club, he has celebrated the 2022 and 2025 Copa Libertadores titles, as well as the 2025 Brazilian championship.

“I'm very happy. It is what my family and I wanted. The time I have spent here, all the work I have done and the perseverance I have shown have made me the player I am today. And most importantly, the affection of the fans. It is the greatest prize I have,” Pulgar said in comments published by the club.

His renewal follows Flamengo’s announcement of two attacking signings: 19-year-old Argentine Joaquín Freitas from River Plate and 23-year-old Ecuadorian winger Anthony Valencia from Royal Antwerp. The moves come as the club deals with the failed transfer of Gonzalo Plata to Dynamo Moscow. Plata traveled to Russia and posed in the Russian club’s kit, but the deal collapsed after Dynamo Moscow cited alleged problems in his medical examinations. Flamengo rejected that explanation and said Plata is fit to compete at the highest level.
