Chile's oldest rally marks 25 years with demanding desert challenge

The historic Desafío del Desierto rally roared to life in Copiapó, marking its 25th edition as Chile's oldest and one of its most challenging off-road events. This quarter-century celebration features a demanding 630-kilometer course across three stages, pushing pilots and teams to their limits in the harsh desert environment.

The race demands a combination of raw speed, extreme navigation, and sheer endurance. Among the notable competitors testing their skills are Francisco "Chaleco" López, a three-time Dakar Rally champion, and Benjamín Herrera, a prominent figure in national enduro racing who is gaining valuable rally experience.

"I am very happy to take on another challenge and continue gaining experience, which is completely different in terms of navigation," Herrera commented from Copiapó. The official program commenced on Thursday, June 25, with administrative and technical checks. Competitive stages, measuring 200, 310, and 120 kilometers respectively, will unfold from Friday through Sunday, adding a new chapter to Chilean motorsport history.
