Chile suspends BTS concerts due to stadium technical issues

Chile has suspended three highly anticipated concerts by the South Korean K-pop sensation BTS, originally scheduled for October at the Estadio Nacional in Santiago. The decision, announced by the National Institute of Sports (IND), stems exclusively from technical and logistical concerns regarding the stadium's current condition and the feasibility of hosting the event.

The IND explained that while the stadium's field remains suitable for football matches, it has a reduced capacity to recover from large-scale, extraordinary interventions. The planned 360° central stage setup for BTS's performances would pose a significant risk to the field's integrity. Furthermore, holding the concerts could jeopardize other pre-scheduled events at the venue, including national football team matches and the annual Teletón charity event.

The cancellation, which comes after tickets sold out rapidly, has ignited a firestorm of criticism among BTS fans, known as ARMY, on social media platforms. Many fans have invested heavily in travel and accommodation for the shows. The official BTS fan club issued a statement urging the state and the production company, DG Medios, to take responsibility for the fans' financial and emotional investments.

Fans are calling for a coordinated effort between the IND, the Ministry of Sports, and DG Medios to find a viable solution, either by ensuring the Estadio Nacional can host the concerts with necessary technical guarantees or by securing an alternative venue. Chilean Interior Minister Claudio Alvarado acknowledged the potential for "disruptions and damage" to the stadium's pitch but mentioned that alternative locations within the Estadio Nacional complex are being evaluated. BTS, one of the most successful musical acts globally, was set to return to Chile after a 2017 visit.
