Chilean congressman advises President Kast to skip Madrid Forum

Jorge Guzmán, a congressman from the Evópoli party, has recommended that President José Antonio Kast refrain from attending the V Regional Meeting of the Madrid Forum, scheduled for September 3 in Santiago.

Guzmán stated that his party will not participate in the event, arguing that the President's presence could generate internal political tensions within the ruling coalition. "I believe it would not be appropriate. I believe the figure of the President of the Republic is a figure of state, and these forums, to some extent, may generate certain internal conflicts that are best avoided," Guzmán explained.

Vicente Bruna, the secretary-general of the Republican Party, confirmed his party's participation, though he lacked information on whether President Kast would attend. Bruna views the forum as a valuable opportunity for debating ideas within the context of a "cultural battle." He stressed that the Republican Party is distinct from its international counterparts, acknowledging different realities that must be addressed.

The Madrid Forum event is organized by the Spanish foundation Disenso and will feature Vox leader Santiago Abascal. Discussions are planned on security, economy, international politics, and freedom of expression. From the opposition, Andrés Couble, secretary-general of the Broad Front, stated that while parties are free to meet with like-minded organizations, "citizens will judge" these international affiliations.
