Chilean deputies approve bill regulating AI and combating deepfakes

Chile's Chamber of Deputies has overwhelmingly approved a groundbreaking bill designed to regulate artificial intelligence and combat the proliferation of deepfakes. With 128 votes in favor, 2 against, and 5 abstentions, the deputies passed the legislation, which specifically targets the creation and dissemination of AI-generated content that can realistically imitate individuals.

The approved bill formally enshrines the right to digital integrity, defining it as an individual's entitlement to prevent their image, body, or voice from being used without consent. It also establishes a clear definition for synthetic content, encompassing any audio, image, or video altered or created by AI that could mislead viewers about a real person's identity or statements.

This legislative initiative, championed by deputy Gael Yeomans, seeks to address the growing concerns surrounding the misuse of AI technologies for creating deceptive digital replicas.
