Chilean football leagues adopt World Cup-inspired rule changes

Chilean professional football leagues are set to introduce a series of new regulations for the second half of the season, drawing inspiration from the rules implemented at the 2026 World Cup. The Chilean Professional Football Referees Union (Arbifup) detailed these upcoming changes, which aim to enhance fairness and game flow.

Among the notable adjustments is the introduction of expulsions for players who cover their mouths during altercations, a measure designed to prevent unsportsmanlike conduct and ensure transparency. Referees will also have the ability to review second yellow cards if they deem them incorrect, providing a mechanism for correcting potential errors. Furthermore, the rules will allow for the rectification of mistaken identities on the field, addressing any confusion that may arise during play.

The league will also implement hydration breaks, which will be mandatory only during periods of very high temperatures. To combat time-wasting tactics, sanctions will be enforced. For instance, goalkeepers who fail to release the ball within the allotted five seconds may result in a corner kick for the opposing team. Additionally, players feigning injury to delay the game will be required to remain off the field for one minute after play resumes, ensuring the game proceeds without undue interruptions.
