Chilean police arrest woman for threatening President Kast on social media

Chilean police have arrested a 23-year-old woman for allegedly making death threats against President José Antonio Kast. The arrest occurred on August 14, 2026, shortly after the threats were posted on Instagram during the president's visit to Talca.

The woman allegedly included insults, a direct reference to a Glock firearm, and an intention to kill in her social media post. She also shared a photograph of the Public Services building in Talca, located in the Maule Region. The Police of Investigations (PDI) acted swiftly to identify and apprehend the suspect.

Public Security Minister Martín Arrau stated that "threatening the life of any Chilean, and the authority, is serious." The PDI's Cybercrime Brigade conducted the investigation, leading to the woman's arrest for threats against authority and the seizure of her mobile phone. The Public Prosecutor's Office has ordered her to be placed at the disposal of the Talca Guarantee Court.

Authorities were alerted to the post by Meta Platforms, the parent company of Instagram. The incident occurred while President Kast was visiting a prison in Talca to oversee the transfer of high-risk inmates, including organized crime leaders, to a higher-security facility.
