China achieves first net-based rocket stage recovery at sea

China has achieved a significant milestone in its space program, successfully recovering the first stage of a Long March 10B carrier rocket using a novel net-based system deployed on a sea platform. This marks the nation's first controlled recovery of a first-stage booster and, according to state media, the world's first net-based recovery of a rocket stage.

The recovery operation, which took place after the rocket's launch from the Hainan commercial spaceport, saw the booster return vertically to a designated sea platform. State broadcaster CCTV reported that the booster separated from the upper stage about six minutes after liftoff and was successfully caught by the large net.

This technological feat is seen as a direct effort by China to narrow the gap with the United States in reusable rocket technology. The successful recovery is crucial for developing more cost-effective space launch capabilities, potentially reducing the expense of future missions and increasing launch frequency. The Global Times hailed the mission as a success for China's reusable launch vehicle program.
