China Conducts Naval, Air Patrols Around Disputed Shoal in South China Sea

China's military has conducted joint air and naval combat drills in the vicinity of the disputed Scarborough Shoal, known in China as Huangyan Dao. The People's Liberation Army Southern Theater Command announced the exercises on Saturday, stating they were a necessary response to actions by "certain countries" that undermine regional peace and stability.

The drills, held in the airspace and waters around the shoal, were intended to test and enhance the combat readiness of Chinese forces in defending national territorial sovereignty and maritime rights. While China did not name the countries involved, the Philippines also claims the shoal, referring to it as Bajo de Masinloc.

In parallel, China has implemented a new policy for the administration of the Huangyan Island National Nature Reserve, established in September 2025. According to Xinhua news agency, the policy prohibits unauthorized fishing, mining, coral or giant clam extraction, and other harmful activities. Violators will face legal accountability, and the China Coast Guard will conduct regular patrols to enforce the ban and address illegal activities. The China Coast Guard also conducted its own rights-protection and law enforcement drill near Huangyan Island on Saturday, signaling an intent to strengthen control in the waters.
