China defends Pacific security role

China has defended its expanding military engagement in the Pacific, asserting that its defense cooperation with Fiji and other regional nations is dedicated to fostering peace, development, and security. Senior Colonel Zhang Yu, China’s Defence Attaché to Fiji, addressed international scrutiny of China's military activities during celebrations for the People’s Liberation Army’s 99th anniversary in Suva.

Over the past week, the Chinese PLA has certainly been full of headlines. I know exactly what everyone is talking about. So today, I’m going to grasp this opportunity to share my understanding and perspectives on China’s national defence and military development.

Zhang sought to reassure Pacific nations, explaining that China’s military development is inherently defensive, shaped by its history of foreign invasions. He highlighted the PLA's commitment to maintaining peace while safeguarding China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Zhang also pointed to China's significant role in global peacekeeping, noting that over 50,000 Chinese personnel have participated in United Nations peacekeeping missions. The Defence Attaché reiterated Beijing's position on Taiwan, calling it a core national interest and reaffirming commitment to peaceful reunification. He expressed gratitude for Fiji's consistent support of the One China policy and underscored the strengthening defense ties between the two countries. Over the past year, more than 40 officers from Fiji's Ministry of Defence and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces have participated in military exchange programs in China. Zhang indicated China's willingness to enhance cooperation with Fiji in maritime security, climate resilience, military training, and the fight against transnational crime. He stressed that Beijing's collaboration with Fiji is not directed against any other nation.
