China drafts 'comprehensive' sanctions list targeting 63 tech sectors in US and allies

China is drafting a "comprehensive" list of 63 technologies that could be subject to export restrictions, targeting sectors where it holds global advantages. This move, detailed in a study published by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, signals a strategic shift for Beijing.

Previously, China was primarily on the receiving end of technology export controls, particularly from the United States under former President Donald Trump. These restrictions aimed to curb China's advancement in high-end manufacturing and frontier science, impacting areas like semiconductors, AI, and aerospace.

However, China's rapid progress in key strategic sectors has prompted a reevaluation. The study, "Selection Framework and Empirical Research of Restricted Export Technology," proposes a systematic approach to identifying technologies for potential outbound controls. This proactive measure suggests China is preparing to leverage its technological strengths to influence global supply chains and counter potential future restrictions.
