China launches mysterious submarine; could carry hundreds of missiles

Satellite imagery analysis suggests China may have launched a new type of large, potentially nuclear-powered submarine, sparking speculation about its capabilities and purpose. The vessel, identified by analysts from sources like Covert Shores and Naval News, was observed at the Jiangnan shipyard in Shanghai.

This newly identified submarine is notably large, measuring around 120 meters in length and 10-11 meters in width. It deviates significantly from conventional submarine designs by lacking a traditional sail, the raised structure that typically houses periscopes and communication equipment. Instead, it features an X-shaped tail configuration and possibly a pump-jet propulsion system, further adding to its enigmatic nature.

While official Chinese data remains unavailable, analysts are exploring various hypotheses regarding the submarine's power source. Some believe it is nuclear-powered, given its size and the capabilities of the Bohai shipyard, which exclusively builds nuclear vessels. Others suggest the possibility of a novel Chinese technology combining a low-power nuclear reactor with Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP).

The most striking speculation concerns the submarine's potential armament. Some analysts hypothesize that this "underwater arsenal ship" could be equipped to carry an unprecedented 300 to 500 missiles, likely housed in Vertical Launch System (VLS) tubes. Such a capacity would far exceed that of any known submarine program globally, raising significant questions about China's naval advancements and strategic intentions.
