China Masters: Shi Yuqi suffers another shock first-round exit after losing to Loh Kean Yew

Shi Yuqi’s difficult run continued at home when Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew beat him 21-11, 21-10 in just 30 minutes in the first round of the Super 750 China Masters.

The world No. 6 suffered his second straight first-round exit after a surprise defeat in the round of 64 at last month’s World Championships. That result also cost the former world No. 1 his top ranking.

Shi had led Loh 4-3 in their previous seven meetings, but he struggled to match the Singaporean’s pace in their latest encounter. Speaking to Hong Kong media, Shi said his overall speed had dropped and that he had not yet found a way to break through.

He said, “I gave it my all today. Unfortunately, I was still trailing by quite a lot, and I hope my form at the Asian Games will be better than it is now.” Shi added that he was not dealing with a physical problem. Instead, he said his recent results had made him too eager to regain his confidence and former rhythm, causing him to rush. He also thanked the home fans for their support.
