China Mudslide Death Toll Rises to Two, With 10 Still Missing

Rescuers in southeastern China’s Jiangxi province found one of the people missing after a rain-triggered mudslide, but the discovery raised the death toll to two. Ten people remained unaccounted for, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The mudslide struck a village in Suichuan County early Saturday after torrential rain brought by tropical cyclone Saudel. Authorities evacuated residents to safer areas. One person pulled from the debris was found dead, while two others were rescued alive and in good condition.

The storm also caused serious flooding in neighboring Fujian province. Xinhua reported that several people remained missing after days of heavy rain, while more than 100 houses collapsed in Huating Town in Putian city. A dike overflowed and breached on Thursday afternoon, flooding villages and trapping residents.

About 600,000 people had been evacuated from high-risk coastal and offshore areas in Fujian by Friday night, according to Xinhua. CCTV footage showed flooded streets as rescuers used inflatable boats to reach affected residents. Saudel made two landfalls in Zhejiang province on August 28 before reaching Fujian as a tropical storm on Thursday.
