Heavy Rain Alert Across India as IMD Warns Delhi NCR and Other States

The monsoon will remain active across large parts of India on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department warning of heavy rain at isolated locations in several states.

Delhi is expected to have cloudy skies and moderate rain, while Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Noida have been placed under a yellow alert. The IMD did not issue a coloured warning for Delhi itself.

The forecast follows two days of heavy rain that caused waterlogging across Delhi-NCR. Gurugram saw traffic chaos and long vehicle queues on Friday and Saturday. On the expressway linking Gurugram with Delhi, a traffic jam stretching nearly 10 kilometres left thousands of commuters trapped for hours.

Heavy showers are also possible in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. West Uttar Pradesh is expected to receive fairly widespread rain on Sunday, while similar conditions could affect East Uttar Pradesh from September 6 to 8. East Rajasthan could see isolated heavy rain.

Thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds pose an additional risk. Gusts of 30 to 40 kmph are possible in parts of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Karnataka and other areas. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal could see thunderstorms with lightning and gusts of 40 to 50 kmph. Rain is expected to continue into Monday.
